The word chai brings back my memories of stopping alongside the streets of India, my tastebuds being summoned by the chai wallahs, or chai makers and their intoxicating spiced tea. Our version of this chai is caffeine-free so you can enjoy it before bed, and protein-packed, to ensure you are getting enough protein from your plant-based diet.
- 1 serving of Ayurvedic Protein® Vanilla Spice (regular or unsweetened)
- 2.5 cups nut milk of choice (we love cashew or oat milk for this recipe!)
- 3–4 whole cloves
- 2–3 slices ginger
- 2 cardamom pods
- 1 cinnamon stick (optional)
- pinch of black pepper
- Sweetener of choice (optional): stevia, coconut sugar, honey, maple syrup
Coarsely crush cloves, cinnamon stick and cardamom with a mortar and pestle.
Add crushed spices, ginger slices, milk and black pepper to a small sauce pan and simmer on low heat for 5 minutes.
Mix in protein until fully dissolved. Continue cooking on low for 1-2 min.
Turn off heat, and pour into your favorite mug through a fine strainer.
If you prefer your chai more sweet, add your preferred sweetener to your liking
